Quick answer: The Arizona Cactus Garden at Stanford University is one of the most unexpected engagement photo locations in the Bay Area: a Southwestern-style cactus garden in the middle of a historic campus. Cacti, succulents and strong shapes give you a modern, colorful, minimalist look that's very different from a beach or a garden. It's free to visit for personal photography, parking is a short walk away, and sunset is the best time to go. Our engagement session is $795 for 1.5 hours.
We're Living Pictures, a San Francisco-based documentary wedding and elopement team. This is the session we photographed with Pham and Kevin, who both went to Stanford and chose the Arizona Cactus Garden because it was the spot of their first date.

Why Pham and Kevin Chose the Arizona Cactus Garden
For Pham and Kevin, the location was personal. They both went to Stanford, and the garden is where their first date happened. Coming back to it for their engagement photos meant the session was about more than a backdrop: it was a return to where their story started.
That's one of our favorite reasons to choose a location. A place with meaning gives a couple something to react to together, and it shows in the photographs.
The garden also works visually. For couples who want something modern, artistic and a little unconventional, it offers:
Unusual textures and shapes. Cacti and succulents create sculptural forms around you without overwhelming the photographs.
Color. The greens, blues and sandy tones are a striking backdrop for your outfits.
A minimalist feel. The landscape is cleaner and simpler than a typical Bay Area engagement session.
A little piece of the desert without leaving the Peninsula.

How We Photographed the Session
We work in a documentary style, so the session was a walk, not a series of rigid poses. We let Pham and Kevin move through the garden, revisit the places they remembered, stop where something caught their eye, and talk. We stayed close, watched for the small moments, and gave direction only when it helped with the light or the composition.

The Light at the Arizona Cactus Garden: Go at Sunset
The garden is open, with no dense tree cover, so there can be a lot of direct sun in the middle of the day. Sunset is the best time to go. The light is low and warm, which softens skin tones and brings out the texture of the plants, and the shadows become more pronounced and graphic.
Sunset: warm, soft, flattering light and long shadows. This is when we recommend booking.
Early morning: also soft, if you prefer a quieter session.
Midday: harsher and flatter, so we look for open shade and strong shapes instead.
Sunset time changes through the year, so we'll plan your start time around the date. A 1.5-hour session starting about an hour before sunset gives you the golden light and the softer glow afterward.

What to Wear to the Cactus Garden
Pick colors that stand out. Against soft greens and sandy tones, deep colors, warm tones and bold neutrals look great. Pastels and whites work too.
Think about texture. Linen, flowing fabrics and structured pieces all photograph well beside spiky, sculptural plants.
Keep your distance from the plants. Cacti have spines, so choose outfits that don't snag, and we'll position you on paths and away from sharp edges.
Wear comfortable shoes for walking on garden paths.
Bring a layer. It can cool off quickly after the sun goes down.

Make It Personal, Like Pham and Kevin
If there's a place that matters to the two of you, such as where you had your first date, where you met or where you got engaged, tell us. A place with a story is often better than a place that's only pretty. If you want to pair it with something very different, the classical architecture of the Pulgas Water Temple is nearby on the Peninsula.

Our Take
Some of our favorite engagement sessions happen in places people don't expect, because the location gives a couple something to react to together. The cactus garden is playful, graphic and a little surprising, and when it's also the place where your story started, it shows in every frame. We photograph all couples with full inclusivity, and some of our team share the LGBTQ+ community with the couples we work with.
