Quick answer: For elegant and timeless, choose San Francisco City Hall. For bright and airy, the Legion of Honor. For city energy, downtown. For sunset and the Golden Gate Bridge, Baker Beach. For color and romance, the Palace of Fine Arts. All five are close enough to combine in one session.
We're Living Pictures, a San Francisco wedding and elopement photography team of four photographers, and we've been photographing couples across the city since 2017. These are the five locations we recommend most, and what we've learned about light, timing and logistics at each.
1. San Francisco City Hall Wedding & Engagement Photos
The Beaux-Arts architecture, marble grand staircase, rotunda and window light make City Hall the city's most photographed civic building. It's the natural choice for City Hall weddings and elopements, and you don't need to be married there to shoot there.
What we like most is the variety inside one building. Staircase portraits, wide rotunda frames and architectural details are minutes apart, so more of your time goes to photos and less to travel. If you're eloping, it's an easy launch point for a longer session elsewhere in the city.
Best for: City Hall weddings and elopements, classic editorial portraits, couples who want elegance without leaving one building. Learn more in our San Francisco City Hall wedding photography guide.

2.Golden Gate Bridge Engagement Photos at Sunset
Baker Beach gives you the Pacific, cliffs and the Golden Gate Bridge in one frame. The reason we love it is the light. Around sunset the sun lights up the beach and the couple, so the bridge doesn't have to be a dark silhouette.
Baker Beach vs. Marshall's Beach: Marshall's is more secluded and dramatic, but the walk down is steep and uneven, so it's best for adventurous couples and not ideal in formal attire.
Baker Beach vs. Crissy Field: Crissy Field is easy to reach and has a great bridge view, but at sunset the light tends to come from behind the bridge, which creates backlit, silhouette-style images.
Bring a warm layer. Wind and fog come with the territory, and a foggy evening can look wonderful. Parking and bathrooms are available on site.
Best for: sunset engagement photos, beach portraits, Golden Gate Bridge photos.

3. Palace of Fine Arts: Romantic Engagement Photos
Columns and a rotunda give you the classical look, and the greenery and lagoon add color and reflections. It's also one of the easier locations to reach, so it's a good pick if you want beautiful scenery without a hike. It sits between the formality of City Hall and the natural scenery of Baker Beach.

Best for: engagement sessions, romantic portraits, couples who want architecture plus greenery.
4. Legion of Honor: Bright, Airy Engagement Photos
Pale stone, columns and open space give the Legion of Honor a European feel and a clean, light look. Lincoln Park surrounds it, so you can mix architectural frames with soft, green portraits without leaving the grounds. It's a strong alternative if you love architecture but want something lighter than City Hall's interior

Best for: engagement photos, wedding portraits, bright and airy galleries.
5. Downtown San Francisco: Urban Wedding & Engagement Photography
If you don't want photos that look like typical wedding photos, go downtown. The Financial District offers skyscrapers, historic buildings and real street life. The Transamerica Pyramid makes an instantly recognizable background, and the Sentinel Building (the Columbus Tower) has an old-Hollywood feel. The waterfront and piers are close if you want to add water.
Here the city becomes part of the story: streets, architecture, movement, fashion. Early morning gives you quieter streets and better light.

How to Combine Locations in One Session
Because these places are close to each other, a multi-location session is easy. Our rule: schedule the most light-dependent location (usually Baker Beach at golden hour) last, and put the architecture earlier, since it's forgiving on timing. A common pairing is City Hall in the morning and the Palace of Fine Arts or Baker Beach later in the day.
Our Take
Choose the location that matches how you want the photos to feel, not just what looks good on Pinterest. Our team knows how the light moves at each of these places and when they're crowded, so we plan the order and timing for you. We photograph all couples with full inclusivity, and some of our team share the LGBTQ+ community with the couples we work with.
