Open daily from dawn to dusk, small photography sessions here don't require a permit, keeping logistics and cost down. Parking is available on campus but can involve a walk — check Stanford's parking maps ahead of time.

Best Times and Logistics for the Light

Late afternoon (golden hour) casts long, warm shadows across the cacti and succulent textures. Early morning offers a quieter, more intimate session. The garden runs warm even in cooler months — dress comfortably and bring water.

What's the best time for photos? Golden hour, the last hour before sunset. Midday sun gets harsh in the garden's open areas, so we avoid shooting then.

Where do we park? Use the L-3 Quarry South Lot off Quarry Road, which leads right into the garden. Parking is free on weekends and weekdays after 4:30 PM.

What should we wear? Neutral, warm tones — cream, sand, terracotta — photograph best against the desert palette. Closed-toe shoes are a good call for the uneven dirt paths.

Is the garden crowded? It's a popular spot for bridal, maternity, and engagement sessions, so expect some company at sunset. Weekdays tend to be quieter.
