Your Two Ceremony Options

The Garden Area. An outdoor space on the Civic Center grounds, open sky, natural light, and the building's distinctive architecture as a backdrop. This is the option most couples choose for photos, since it offers far more room to work with than the indoor alternative, and it's the setting we most often recommend when couples ask us directly.

The Wedding Room. A small, indoor ceremony room inside the County Clerk's office. It holds a maximum of 6 people, including the couple, so if you're bringing guests, you'll need to plan around that number carefully. This option is better suited to a true elopement or a ceremony with just one or two additional guests, and we shoot it often for couples who want something quiet and unhurried.

If a bigger gathering is genuinely important to you, most couples in that position use the Civic Center purely as a photography location and hold their actual reception-scale ceremony somewhere else entirely.

Booking and Timing

Ceremonies are performed Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday only, in appointment slots at 10:00 am, 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, or 2:00 pm. The ceremony fee is $56. You'll need to call the Marin County Clerk's Office directly at (415) 473-6772 to book your slot; this isn't a walk-in service.

What's Allowed and What Isn't

Cameras are permitted throughout the Civic Center, so bringing us along as your photographer is never an issue. For safety reasons, nothing may be thrown in or around the building, no rice, no petals, no confetti, but bubbles are the one common exception you'll see allowed, and they photograph beautifully in the garden's natural light.

Marriage License and Witness Requirements

You'll need a valid marriage license before your ceremony, obtained in person with valid photo ID, and it must be used within 90 days of its issue date. If you're using a public marriage license, you're required to bring at least one witness. A confidential marriage license doesn't require a witness at all, the same distinction that applies at SF City Hall.

Two Separate Costs to Keep in Mind

It's easy to conflate these, but they're billed by completely different parties. The $56 ceremony fee goes to the County Clerk for performing the ceremony itself. A Nice Detail Most Couples Don't Expect

The County Clerk's office serves couples in both English and Spanish, which matters if you or your guests are more comfortable in Spanish for the ceremony itself.

Most of the couples we shoot here choose the garden, it photographs beautifully and gives everyone room to actually be present instead of packed into a small office. But if you're planning a true two-person elopement, the wedding room is perfectly suited to that, just don't expect to sneak extra guests in past the six-person cap.
