Quick answer: Marin Castle is a private hilltop venue in Marin County with sweeping views over forested hills, which makes it a good choice for an elopement that feels secluded and unlike a typical park or beach. Because it's a private venue, you book it directly instead of applying for a park permit, and the venue sets its own rules for ceremonies and photography. Plan portraits for the hour or so before sunset. Our elopement coverage starts at $1,000 for 2 hours, and most couples spend $2,000 for 4 hours, about half a day.
We're Living Pictures, a San Francisco-based documentary wedding and elopement team. Below is Taryn and Matt's elopement at Marin Castle, where a vintage yellow car was brought in for the photo shoot, followed by what to know if you want to plan something similar.

Why Taryn and Matt Chose Marin Castle
It's above the clouds. On a day when fog fills the valleys, the hilltop can sit above it, so the views feel like another world.
It's private. There are no other visitors, no crowds and no other groups in the frame, so they could take their time.
It's close to the city, but feels remote. It's a short drive from San Francisco, yet the layers of forested hills make it feel like you've gone far away.
In the hero photo you can see why: ridgeline after ridgeline of forested hills, lit gold. For couples who want a secluded elopement without a long trip, that's a strong combination.
A private venue like this gives you:
Privacy. No other visitors, so you can take your time.
Views. The hills and sky become the backdrop for the whole day.
Convenience. You can have a remote-feeling day close to home, which helps if your guests or vendors are coming from the city or the Bay Area.
How We Photographed the Day
We photograph in a documentary style, so we work with the light and with what the two of you do naturally.
For a car elopement, we plan for:
Wide frames with the car, the road and the landscape.
Detail shots: the veil, the shoes, the open door.
Candid moments between the portraits: getting in and out of the car, a quiet laugh.

What to Wear for a Vintage Car Elopement
Taryn wore a white lace dress with a long veil and bow-trimmed heels, and Matt wore a cream linen suit with brown loafers. The soft, warm tones look natural beside the yellow car and the golden hills.
Pick colors that work with the car. Cream, ivory and warm neutrals look striking against a bold color like yellow.
Think about movement. A long veil looks beautiful in the wind, so we position you with the breeze in mind.
Choose comfortable shoes. Driveways, gravel and grass can be uneven.
Bring a layer. Hilltops in Marin can be cool and breezy as the sun goes down.
Check the car's seats and doors before you choose a skirt or train, so nothing gets caught.

Planning a Vintage Car Elopement at a Private Venue
1. Book the venue first. Marin Castle is private, so ask about availability, fees, ceremony and photography rules, and whether outside vendors and a vintage car are allowed.
2. Choose the car early. You don't need to own one. A local vintage car owner can bring a car for the shoot. Confirm that the owner allows photography, who drives, and where the car can safely park and turn around.
3. Build the timeline around golden hour. Start your portraits about 1 to 1.5 hours before sunset for warm, soft light on the hills. Sunset time changes through the year, so we plan your start time for your date.

Making It Legal in Marin
The legal side is simple, and it's a supporting detail here.
Marriage license: from the Marin County Clerk. The public license is $85, and the confidential license is $93.
Civic Center ceremony: a civil ceremony at the Marin Civic Center is $56 on Tuesday through Thursday, by appointment.
Deputization: a friend or family member can marry you with a one-day deputization ($60).
Validity: a license is valid for 90 days, and in California you can marry anywhere in the state with it. Photographers can act as your witnesses.
If you'd like a civil ceremony and a private venue, you can sign at the Civic Center and do your portraits and celebration elsewhere.

Our Take
The best elopement photos show who you are. A vintage car, an outfit you love and a setting you chose for the privacy say more about you than a location chosen for its popularity. We photograph all couples with full inclusivity, and some of our team share the LGBTQ+ community with the couples we work with.
